Jochen Hanebeck

Chief Executive Officer, Infineon

On Tuesday, the 11th of June 2024 at the Technical University of Munich, Jochen Hanebeck from Infineon Technologies took the Audimax stage to share invaluable insights and personal experiences from his remarkable journey in the semiconductor industry.

Jochen emphasised the critical connection between decarbonisation and digitalisation, stating, “There is no decarbonisation without digitalisation. We must approach them together with our suppliers, customers, and partners”.

He highlighted the immense impact of the semiconductor industry, with a revenue of €600 billion last year, calling it the "oil of the 21st century". Jochen also shared exciting news about a joint venture with TSMC, set to break ground in late 2024, which promises a significant boost for the sector.

Addressing sustainability, Jochen pointed out that data centres consume 2% of the world's electricity, a figure that could rise to 7%. He stressed the urgent need for action to make this trend more sustainable.

Looking ahead, he discussed the future of AI and the limitations of current GPU architectures. He introduced the concept of neuromorphic chips, which aim to mimic the brain’s functionality, though we are still far from fully simulating a human brain.

The session ended with an enriching Q&A from students as well as an after-event for networking opportunities.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Jochen Hanebeck for sharing his time, experiences, and invaluable insights with us, and to all who joined us for this engaging session.
